Promoting democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean

We strengthen those on the front lines who defend  human rights, freedom, and justice.

Our Mission

Espacio Crítico is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the capacities of key actors—civil society, independent journalists, and political leaders—to protect democracy, human rights, and the rule of law across Latin America and the Caribbean.

By providing support in the design and implementation of effective strategies, fostering international networks, and offering specialized guidance, we help ensure these actors can make a real impact in advancing democracy in a challenging regional context.

why we exist

In Latin America and the Caribbean, democracy has made progress, but unevenly—and with some setbacks. While many countries have strengthened their institutions and electoral processes, inequality, exclusion, and the fragility of the rule of law persist across the region. Tensions arise not only from openly authoritarian regimes but also from democracies that tolerate regressive practices, corruption, impunity, and political polarization.

In this context, those who promote democratic values—whether from civil society, independent journalism, or political leadership—stand on the front line of defense against institutional decay and injustice. At Espacio Crítico, we work to strengthen their capacities, support their efforts, and develop strategies that enable them to act effectively and sustainably.

Who We Are

Espacio Crítico was founded by Tamara Taraciuk Broner and Miguel Pizarro, two well-known figures recognized for their work defending human rights and democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean.

With more than two decades of experience, they have faced the challenges of democratic backsliding firsthand. Together, they bring a unique combination of strategic vision, technical credibility, and high-level networks.

This initiative offers practical, strategic, and flexible support that adapts to the real capacities and needs of local actors on the front lines.

We have a multidisciplinary team with experience in project management, applied research, strategic communication, and logistical support in complex contexts. We can serve as strategists, advisors, or facilitators, depending on what each organization requires.
